About Us
Why Breastfeeding Matters
Breast milk is the gold standard for infant nutrition. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), breast milk provides a baby with ideal nutrition and supports growth and development. Breastfeeding helps protect babies against illnesses: breastfed infants have lower rates of asthma, obesity, type 1 diabetes, sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), ear infections and stomach bugs. It also transmits maternal antibodies, strengthening babies’ immune systems.
Mothers benefit too. Breastfeeding can reduce a mother’s risk of breast and ovarian cancer, type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure. It’s convenient—breast milk is always at the right temperature, no bottles are needed, and breastfeeding can comfort a baby during travel or disruptions. Health organizations such as the American Academy of paediatrics and the World Health Organization recommend exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months, with appropriate complementary foods introduced thereafter while continuing breastfeeding up to age two or beyond.

Comprehensive Support from a Lactation Consultant
Comprehensive
1. Breastfeeding Education
Education begins before birth. During prenatal consultations, your lactation consultant discusses the benefits of breastfeeding and teaches proper techniques. You’ll learn about colostrum (the nutrient‑rich first milk), how milk supply is driven by the baby’s demand and signs that your baby is feeding well. After delivery, education continues with practical instruction on positioning, latch and establishing a feeding routine. Early knowledge helps build confidence and sets realistic expectations, reducing stress during the first weeks at home.
2. Latching and Positioning
A correct latch ensures effective milk transfer and prevents nipple pain and cracking. Consultants watch you breastfeed, guide you through various holds—such as cradle, cross‑cradle, football/clutch or side‑lying positions—and adjust baby’s alignment so that more of the areola is in the mouth. Proper positioning can help reduce issues like engorgement and mastitis. Your consultant will also teach you to look for signs of a good latch (e.g., rhythmic sucking and swallowing, rounded cheeks) and to break suction gently when needed.
3. Milk Supply Concerns
Milk supply depends on adequate breast stimulation and effective drainage. If you have a low milk supply, your consultant may suggest increasing the number of feedings, ensuring optimal latch, switching breasts during feeding and, if necessary, pumping after nursing to stimulate production. For an overabundant supply, they may recommend block feeding (sticking to one breast per session) and hand expression to relieve fullness without overstimulating production. They can also monitor your baby’s weight gain and diaper output to assess milk intake.
4. Nipple Pain and Breast Issues
It’s normal to feel some tenderness when you first start breastfeeding, but persistent pain signals a problem. Lactation consultants diagnose and manage issues such as sore or cracked nipples, blocked ducts, blebs, mastitis and thrush. Treatment may include adjusting latch and positioning, using warm compresses, applying medical‑grade lanolin or recommending temporary pumping to allow healing. They also teach breast massage and expression techniques to relieve engorgement.
5. Breastfeeding with Medical Conditions
Special circumstances require individualized care. Consultants can help mothers who have diabetes or other chronic illnesses adjust feeding schedules and manage blood‑sugar fluctuations while nursing. They also guide families when babies are born prematurely or with conditions such as tongue‑tie, cleft palate or jaundice. In such cases, a consultant may work alongside paediatricians and other specialists to support weight gain and feeding safety. They may show you how to use special feeding tools or refer you for frenotomy (tongue‑tie release) when needed.
6. Pumping and Milk Storage
Whether you’re returning to work or want others to share feedings, pumping can maintain supply and provide flexibility. Lactation consultants teach you how to choose and properly fit a breast pump, the difference between manual and electric pumps and how to maximize output. They review safe storage guidelines, such as refrigerating freshly pumped milk for up to four days or freezing it for several months, labeling containers with the date, and thawing frozen milk safely. Consultants can also show you how to hand express milk if you don’t have access to a pump.
7. Breastfeeding Multiples
Feeding twins or triplets can feel daunting, but with guidance it is achievable. Consultants explain tandem feeding positions and show you how to support two babies simultaneously using pillows or twin‑nursing cushions. They help you develop a feeding schedule that ensures each baby receives enough milk and that your supply adapts to increased demand. If babies have different feeding abilities (for example, one twin is smaller or premature), they’ll suggest individualized strategies while keeping your routine manageable.
8. Transitioning Back to Work
Returning to work doesn’t mean you have to stop breastfeeding. A consultant assists in creating a pumping plan to maintain supply while you’re away from your baby. They advise on pumping frequency (often every 2–3 hours), storage at the workplace, and communicating with employers about your need for break times and private pumping spaces. You’ll learn to stockpile milk before returning to work and to nurse frequently when you are at home to keep supply steady.
9. Weaning Support
Weaning is a gradual process. Consultants guide you through baby‑led or mother‑led weaning, helping you reduce feedings gradually to avoid engorgement and ensuring your child still receives adequate nutrition. They discuss introducing complementary foods at about six months of age and offer tips on maintaining closeness and comfort during the transition, such as cuddling or reading together.
10. Emotional Support
Breastfeeding can evoke a range of emotions—from joy to anxiety or frustration. Lactation consultants provide empathetic listening, reassurance and encouragement. They can screen for postpartum mood disorders and refer you to mental health professionals if needed. Support groups and peer counsellors may also be recommended to foster community.
